Softball - A Brief History of the Sport

As the CEO of Innovative Senior Living, Inc., in Tucson, Klaus Axen supervises an assisted-living company that provides personal care in a residential setting. Outside of work, Klaus Axen enjoys reading, spending time with his family, and coaching softball.

Although it is natural to think that softball is derived from baseball, that is not the case. Softball was introduced at a Harvard-Yale football game on Thanksgiving Day in 1887. When a Yale alumnus heard that Harvard had won the game, he threw a boxing glove at a Harvard supporter, who responded by swinging at the glove with a stick. This simple action developed into an impromptu “softball” game that ended in a score of 41-40.

George Hancock, a reporter who participated in the game, is credited with creating the earliest rules and equipment for softball, which was known by other names at the time, including mush ball, cabbage ball, and kitten ball. As a sport, softball gained popularity throughout the 20th century.

The Amateur Softball Association, now called USA Softball, was founded in 1933 and standardized rules based on age groups. In 1996, the game was further legitimized when it became an Olympic event. Although it was dropped from the Games in 2012, softball will make its return to the Olympics in 2020.

Youth On Their Own Details New Strategic Plan

A graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Arizona, Klaus Axen heads Innovative Senior Living Inc. as its chief executive officer. To give back to the community, Klaus Axen donates to several different local and national organizations, including Youth On Their Own (YOTO). An Arizona-based organization, YOTO works to prevent school dropout among homeless, unaccompanied young people.

This past spring, YOTO met with a local nonprofit consulting firm that specializes in organizational development to craft a new strategic plan that will guide its growth for the coming three years. YOTO organized focus groups for students, donors, and volunteers to hear their opinions of the program and learn what could be improved.

The results of these discussions are five new main goals for the organization. First, the organization will improve and streamline service delivery so that youth receive the greatest benefit possible. Second, YOTO will provide more meaningful opportunities for volunteers to develop a robust volunteer network. Also, the organization will strengthen relationships with donors and improve communication with all stakeholders. The final goal involves expanding facilities to allow for additional programmatic growth.

Popular Golf Courses and Clubs in Arizona

An accomplished entrepreneur in Arizona, Klaus Axen serves as the CEO of three successful companies: Innovative Senior Living, Inc., Ahwooga online marketplace for motor vehicle parts, and Fundreasy, a website that helps small nonprofits in Tucson with their fundraising. When he’s not busy leading his businesses, Klaus Axen enjoys golfing.

When many individuals think about top golf courses, they think about courses in Arizona. Below are a few examples:

- Forest Highlands Golf Club: The Canyon course at Forest Highlands Golf Club was designed by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf in 1988 as one of two courses at the club. It was the venue of the 2006 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship and features a tree-lined, bluegrass fairway dotted with canyons and streams.

- Troon North Golf Club: A semi-private club, Troon North sets many standards for the desert golf experience. The club is located in the Sonoran Desert and features a unique blend of desert ambiance and challenging ravines and foothills. Its Pinnacle and Monument courses are the most popular, with many golfers placing them at the top of their must-play lists.

- Boulders Golf Club: Established in 1985, Boulders is a world-renowned spa, tennis, and golf resort. Over the years, it has earned numerous awards and was ranked as the #1 Golf Resort in the Southwest in 2005 and 2006. Designed by Jay Morrish, Boulders features a tight golf course that winds through tranquil desert scenery.

Food Banks, Explained

Along with his responsibilities as CEO of Innovative Senior Living, Klaus Axen leads Fundreasy, an organization that provides nonprofits with access to crowdfunding opportunities. Klaus Axen’s charitably minded endeavors also include supporting a food bank in his Tucson, Arizona, community.

Food banks are nonprofit organizations that serve as central collection and distribution points for charities whose missions center on confronting the issue of hunger. Food banks typically do not give food directly to those in need but instead provide the logistical backbone to help food pantries and other charities that do.

Food banks rely on donations from grocery stores and wholesalers to stock their shelves, putting to good use food that retailers might otherwise throw away. Beyond food distribution, food banks serve as community leaders, carrying out investigations into the local causes of poverty and encouraging elected officials to preserve much-needed programs. Common in most metropolitan areas, where on an annual basis they may store and distribute several million of pounds of food, food banks also exist as smaller operations in rural areas across the United States.

Fundreasy.com - A Streamlined Way to Attract Charitable Donors

Innovative Senior Living CEO Klaus Axen devotes his time to several business and charitable activities. Klaus Axen also directs Fundreasy.com, a website connects nonprofit groups with local businesses.

Fundreasy.com simplifies the process of raising money. Instead of spending long hours creating and publicizing fundraising events, leaders of nonprofits can create custom websites in as little as 10 minutes. Combined with social media, this method empowers charities to spread the word to their donor networks in less time than conventional media marketing.

In addition, Fundreasy.com enables businesses to pool their efforts to support local charities. Merchants and others can create discount packages that online contributors receive for a gift of $20. This allows businesses to make their brands known to consumers, leading to positive customer perceptions and aiding worthy causes.

Unlike other third-party fundraisers, Fundreasy.com helps fundraisers keep 75% of collected funds. This frees up time for nonprofits to pursue other goals that are more in line with their mission.
